Today we had our first class meetings. My first class was London and it's Literature which I found very overwhelming. Almost everyone in the class is English majors which makes this right up their ally...for me? not so much. My brain doesn't work in that way and I already feel defeated. But Mary is in that class too so at least I'll have someone else suffering with me too! Sometimes knowing someone else is going through it too makes it a little less painful. My second class was British Culture and Society and it's awesome! I'm so excited for this class...on Tuesday we already have a field trip to Hampton Court Palace. My professor taught on the UK about things like the countries that make the whole United Kingdom, how the UK flag was designed, reasons why the UK and England in particular do not associate as closely with the European nations and he dove into the Monarchy system. We did this activity in the beginning of class where we listed 3 characteristics we think of being British, 3 famous people we think of as being British and 3 places we think of as being British. It was super interesting hearing what things are true and what aren't so much anymore, a few of the typical ideas we have about Britian aren't acurate at all!
After class Mary and I bonded with some new girls. We went to a local pub and I had cider for the first time and it was delicious! Such a great alternative to beer I must say! Later that night a bunch of us went to another pub to hang out...it was nice to meet everyone and almost easier since it was in such a social setting!
